Notes from the Table: When a Man Just Needs to Be Close

On the phone he asked for the strongest massage I had. Deep, sporty, nothing soft. When he arrived - a man in his fifties, well dressed, careful with every word - I already understood that the phone call had been a kind of armor.

He had booked our sensual massage. On a mattress, not a table. He noticed that straight away and asked why. I told him the truth: a table keeps a distance, and some sessions are not about distance. On the floor, on a wide mattress, there is room to slow right down, to be close, to let a person be held instead of handled.

He went quiet at that word. Held.

For the first ten minutes he stayed tense, waiting for the "sporty" part, for me to dig in and prove something. I didn't. I kept it slow and warm and let the silence do half the work. And somewhere around the point where most people stop performing, his shoulders finally dropped - not because I found the right muscle, but because he stopped bracing against being cared for.

Later he told me, almost apologising, that nobody had touched him with any kindness in a long time. Not since the divorce. He had come in asking for something hard because that felt safer to want than the real thing, which was simply this: an hour of not being alone in his own skin.

I say this often and I mean it every time - the work is not really about technique. Technique is easy, it is the part you can learn in a weekend. The part that matters is reading the man in front of you and giving him what he actually needs, which is almost never what he ordered on the phone. Sometimes that is a deep tantra session that unspools an hour of held breath. Sometimes it is just staying close and unhurried until a person remembers that touch can be gentle.

He booked again before he left. Same day next week. This time he didn't ask for the strongest one.

If you have been carrying that same quiet thing - the sense that you are touched plenty in passing but held by no one - you are not strange, and you are far from alone. A lot of good, composed men walk in with the exact same armor. You do not have to explain it, and you do not have to earn it. You just have to come in, lie down, and let the hour be soft.
